PSYCHEDELIC ETHICS: REDUCING RELATIONAL HARM IN PSYCHEDELIC-ASSISTED THERAPY

🗣Psychologist, Member of the Clinical Research Team at Cybin Inc & Gilgamesh Pharmaceuticals

⏰Thu 2nd March, 8PM CET (7PM GMT, 2PM EST, 11AM PST)

📍Online (OPEN Community Platform)

Preventing relational harm in psychedelic therapy settings remains a crucial challenge for the field. Many soon-to-be practitioners of psychedelic therapy have expressed a strong desire to learn more about this topic in order to provide safer and more effective care for their patients.

The EMBARK psychedelic facilitator training program, co-created by Dr. Bill Brennan & Dr. Alex Belser, has placed ethical issues at its core. The material in this presentation is drawn from the training program’s “Ethically rigorous care” module, which is part of the ethics curriculum used to train facilitators in clinical trials at Cybin and other research groups.

The hour will begin with an overview of four types of relational harm and current best practices for reducing the likelihood of their occurrence. They include therapist sexual abuse, harmful forms of touch, disruptions of the therapeutic frame, and other misuses of role power. The remaining portion of the hour will consist of group discussion.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Bill Brennan, PhD, is a psychologist in New York City. He is a co-developer of the EMBARK approach to psychedelic-assisted therapy (with Dr. Alex Belser) and has served as core faculty in the EMBARK facilitator training program and as clinical supervisor in trials that have used EMBARK. He works as a consultant for several companies developing psychedelic treatments and has co-authored treatment manuals for several ongoing trials. He is a member of the legislative committee of the New York Psilocybin Action Committee, a group that works toward the decriminalization of psilocybin and other psychedelics. His interests are at the intersection of psychedelics and liberatory approaches to healing that contribute to systemic change.

He conducted his dissertation on ethical relationship and boundary-setting in psychedelic work and has written, spoken, and consulted on various other topics in psychedelic-assisted therapy.

An essay of his entitled “The Revolution Will Not Be Psychologized: Psychedelics’ Potential for Systemic Change” was recently included in the edited volume Psychedelic Justice: Toward a Diverse and Equitable Psychedelic Culture.
