The Metaphysics of Psychedelic Experiences

🗣 With Sharday Mosurinjohn (Queen’s University), Marta Santuccio (Flesh & Skin), Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes (University of Exeter), and Jussi Jylkkä (Åbo Akademi)

⏰ Monday 11 December, 8PM CET (7PM GMT, 2PM EST, 11AM PST)

📍 Online (OPEN Community Platform)

EXPLORING THE metaphysical nature of psychedelic experiences

This panel features a number of psychedelic researchers with extensive knowledge in the field of metaphysics. Together, they will engage in a discussion about the metaphysical nature of psychedelic experiences themselves and their place in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and personal growth. First, terms will be defined, specifically what distinguishes metaphysics from mysticism and abstract concepts more generally. Then, the panelists will look critically at the role of metaphysics in psychedelic therapy as it is employed today. What role should it play for patients exactly? And are there alternatives to the current methods?

ABOUT THE SPEAKERs

Sharday Mosurinjohn researches and teaches on esotericism, occult sciences, and new religious movements. She is interested in working with, and enlivening integrative, non-mechanistic worldviews within Western esoteric traditions. Her focus is on entheogens and psychedelics and her first book is The Spiritual Significance of Overload Boredom (2022; McGill-Queen’s University Press). Sharday’s major project right now is around psychedelic spiritual crises and synthesizing tools for facilitating navigating existential distress, recovery and maps for meaning-making, by integrating scientific and humanistic research methodologies at the same time as building bridges between academic perspectives and insights gleaned from communities deeply engaged in psychedelic practices. She holds leadership positions in organizations in the discipline of religious studies, including at the American Academy of Religion Religion and Drugs unit. In addition, she is a founding member of the Human Augmentation Research Network.

Marta Santuccio is an expanded consciousness and embodiment facilitator, PhD in philosophy on the metaphysics of consciousness and Holotropic Breathwork facilitator (apprentice). She leads contemplative embodiment journeys and practices that blend metaphysics enquiry with experience in natural non-ordinary and embodied states that offer a unique process of self-transformation and for preparation and integration of psychedelic experiences. This experiential method can also constitute a useful tool to be incorporated into a metaphysician’s research kit.

Dr. Peter Sjöstedt-Hughes is a Philosopher of Mind and Metaphysics who specializes in the thought of Whitehead, Nietzsche, and Spinoza—and in fields pertaining to panpsychism and altered states of consciousness. He is a lecturer at The University of Exeter. Peter is also the author of Noumenautics (2015), Modes of Sentience (2021), co-editor and contributor of Bloomsbury’s Philosophy and Psychedelics (2022), the TEDx Talker on ‘psychedelics and consciousness‘, and he is inspiration to the recreation of inhuman philosopher Marvel Superhero, Karnak.

Jussi Jylkkä is a philosopher and psychologist working at the psychology department at Åbo Akademi university, Finland. He has done research in areas such as cognitive psychology, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind and language. Since 2022 he has been working on the three-year project “Comforting delusions or life-transforming insights”, funded by the Kone foundation, focusing on psychedelic insights and their compatibility with the scientific worldview. He coordinates the Network for Psychedelic Research which brings together psychedelic researchers from both humanities and science.
